The Story Behind This Rug
Shah Abbas motifs came to maturity in 17th-century Safavid court workshops, forming the foundation of the classic Persian garden aesthetic, with its system of palmettes, rosettes, and scrolling vines linked together. Rugs produced by the Ziegler company in Sultanabad in the late 19th century brought this heritage to the European market; today, Afghan weavers carry on the same tradition in workshops in Mazar-i-Sharif. The red field complements modern interiors.
Why Choose a One-of-a-Kind Handwoven Afghan Rug
- Each rug is made by a single team of weavers; an identical one cannot be reproduced.
- 100% Ghazni sheep's wool resists stains thanks to its natural lanolin and develops a patina over the years.
- Plant root and bark dyes, unlike synthetic colors, soften and fade over time.
- The asymmetrical Persian knot creates a dense, durable weave.
- The natural washed finish gives the rug an antique texture and a soft hand.
Color and Pattern
Large palmettes at the center of the red field are surrounded by an all-over pattern of rosettes and scrolling vines. Madder red, golden yellow, and indigo enliven the motifs; ivory corner pieces frame the composition. A chain of palmettes and rosettes runs around the field in the border.
Care Recommendations
- Vacuum once a week using a low-suction setting and no brush attachment.
- Blot stains gently with a damp white cloth; do not rub.
- Have it inspected by a professional rug cleaner every 3-4 years.
- Keep it out of direct sunlight and use a rug pad.
This numbered original comes to you as a one-of-a-kind rug bearing the weaver's signature.

Protect Their Elegance
To preserve the original splendor and silky texture of Carpetdocia’s handwoven, natural-fiber creations that bring value to your living space for generations, adopt a gentle care routine.
Immediate Action and Liquid Spills
When spills occur, timing is critical. Use a clean, slightly damp cloth to lift the liquid from the surface by gently blotting only - never rub. Always work in the direction of the rug pile (the fibers’ natural lay). Rubbing can damage the shape of delicate fibers such as TENCEL™ and viscose. If in doubt, stop immediately.
Routine Care and Light Balance
For your weekly cleaning routine, always use vacuum cleaners with low suction power. High-powered upright vacuums and stiff brushes can damage the natural structure of handwoven yarns. To balance natural fibers’ reaction to light and prevent localized tonal differences (fading), we recommend changing your rug’s direction every 2 to 6 months.
The Expert Touch (Professional Cleaning)
Noble fibers such as handwoven TENCEL™, viscose, and New Zealand wool should not come into contact with household chemical cleaners. These products can irreversibly damage the rug’s silky sheen and structural integrity. For a thorough clean, seek help only from professional rug care centers specializing in natural fibers.
